Exploring Manchester on Foot

As working from home has become the ‘new normal’ we have been all been feeling a little restless. However, the lockdown period has given us the opportunity to explore our city like never before.

Post-lockdown means more chances to explore. This is why Manchester is a great place to check out because you can get a lot done in just 24 hours in the city.

From idyllic canal strolls to hidden urban gems, discover some of our favourite spots to explore whilst stretching your legs…

As we head into the summer months, we have rounded up some of Manchester's most loved walks to help you explore what the city has to offer, although we would recommend taking an umbrella – just in case. 

Street Art Walk, Northern Quarter 

Take a stroll around one of Manchester’s coolest neighbourhoods, we promise you won’t be disappointed! The Northern Quarter is home to countless independent shops, cafes, restaurants & bars – the majority of whom are offering take out services during the recent lockdown. Grab a coffee from Flok & admire the amazing graffiti on Thomas Street & Stevenson Square.

New Islington Marina 

Venture just 5 minutes from Northern Quarter to the calm oasis of New Islington Marina. Take the scenic path past the old cotton mills of Ancoats, via the cobbles of Redhill Street and you will find yourself transported from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. On sunnier days, we recommend packing up a picnic & walking through the marina to the parkland by Lock Keeper’s Cottage.

Castlefield Canal Walk 

Explore the Castlefield area where you’ll see reminders of Manchester’s industrial past. A heritage park of canal systems and old warehouses that have now been converted into trendy workspaces, bars and desirable apartments. The stroll around Castlefield isn’t particularly long but is one of Manchester’s most iconic attractions and a ‘must-do’ when exploring the city on foot.

Heaton Park 

If you are looking to get out of the city centre, why not hop on a tram and explore Heaton Park? In just 25 minutes you will find yourself immersed in the 600-acre green space which is home to hundreds of winding footpaths. We recommend walking up to the Grade I listed Heaton Hall to take in the amazing views of Manchester’s skyline.

Worsley Village 

One of Salford and Greater Manchester’s most quaint villages, Worlsey’s half-timber buildings and tranquil canal-side settings make for a lovely picturesque walk. The circular 5km/3 mile route takes you around the Bridgewater Canal Worsley Woods and fascinating surrounding heritage area. A slightly longer walk than the others but worth the drive out of the city centre!
